An unusually rich spot
Between the tidal traps, the marshes and the pine wood, Rota packs very different habitats into very little ground.
That variety draws a lot of birds and makes them easy to watch without travelling far. Birds are also a good measure of the health of the ecosystem: where the marsh is alive, the birds follow.
The photographer Antonio Gallardo, author of the book «Fauna del Pinar de Rota», and the biologist Adrián Ruiz work with the association to identify species and to teach people to watch calmly and without disturbance.

When and how
Watching without disturbing
The Rota coast is a passage and wintering area: much of the birding interest falls outside the summer, when waders and migrants arrive. The corrales themselves work as a living natural hide, a place to see birds at close range.
Watching is done calmly and at a distance, without chasing or disturbing the birds. Binoculars, patience and quiet are all it takes.
